The pan is smooth and the tilt is smooth throughout the 45° up and 45° down range. They both have 120 mm bowls. Please see my other items for sale. This OConnor 50D true fluid tripod head has the 120 mm claw ball base. It can be detached for a different base. The serial number is 502886196. It comes with one handle exclusive to the model 50D. If I find the second handle I will include it, too. The bubble level appears to have not lost any fluid and is functional. This head has the aftermarket Peter Lisand adjustable platform with its sliding top for fine balance adjustment (1¾ inch range) and its camera plate with the quick snap attach and quick release. The camera plate attaches to the bottom of a camera or to a cameras tripod adapter.
The original 3/8-16 OConnor brass tie down screw with the O retaining ring is included. They are very expensive if you can find them. A second camera plate is very convenient if more than one camera will be used on this head so you dont have to be switching one plate between them. The original owner and user of this head was the Safeway supermarkets audio-visual studio in Oakland, California in the 1970s.It was then used by Tele-Video Production Services, also in Oakland. It was then in storage for about thirty years. Two very small steel socket head screws and one large steel socket head screw have some rust on their heads.
The unit needs some detailing for some dust that is in hard to reach places. Note: All fasteners are Imperial / English, not metric. Two outstanding characteristics of this head are its light weight, about 7 pounds with one handle, and its maximum payload of 50 pounds (see below). My first counterbalanced fluid head was another OConnor 50D that I used for very narrow smooth panning and tilting with a big, heavy zoom lens at extreme telephoto (long focal length) and I rented that one out for a few years before I got a later, very expensive model OConnor head and several models of the very expensive English Vinten heads that have infinitely variable counterbalance. Those type of expensive heads are very heavy compared to the OConnor 50D.
The tilt range of the OConnor 50D is plus and minus 45°. The pan and tilt drag adjustments are continuously/infinitely variable, another advantage compared to some other design heads like Sachtler that also have a stepped counterbalance design that is relatively lightweight but the trade off is you cant adjust for perfect balance.
The iconic / classic, OConnor fluid heads are made in Costa Mesa, California, USA. The OConnor model 50D load capacity, like all counterbalanced heads, depends on the height of the camera above the platform. The counterbalance in this head is fixed. The only way you can balance a camera (by balance I mean the camera remains motionless throughout the tilt range when you let go of the handle) is by positioning the tie down screw on the camera plate and by adjusting the sliding platform and/or adding accessories like a heavy battery, the handles, remote zoom and focus, a monitor, etc. Or by raising the height of the camera above the platform.
I assume that this head has the standard counterbalance spring. When I find the original standard counter spring I will sell that separately.Chadwell OConnor, the inventor, died in 2007 at 93. Chadwell O'Connor (October 9, 1914 September 5, 2007) was an American inventor and steam engine enthusiast. He is most remembered as the inventor of an improved fluid-damped tripod head, for which he won Academy Awards in 1975 and 1992.
